Featured Cancer Survivor: Addison A.

Posted by William Law on

Addison was diagnosed with high-risk Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2015, one month before her 9th birthday. She celebrated that birthday in the hospital, in isolation, at Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock. For the rest of that year, she underwent chemo through a port in her chest, in her spinal fluid, and in her brain through lumbar punctures, sometimes bi-weekly, as well as orally.

She received blood transfusions, platelets, cryoprecipitate (a blood component), IV antibiotics and pain management medication, MRIs, scans, tests, and IV nutrition (TPN) due to being so sick that she couldn't eat for weeks. She lost half of her body weight as well as all of her hair... Twice. She experienced almost every side effect possible from the dozens of chemotherapy treatments she took as well as nausea, mouth ulcers, vomiting, weight loss, fevers, infections, nerve pain, muscle cramping, aching bones, and more.

Somehow, she went through all of this with a smile on her face and a servant's heart. When she felt okay, she would host bake sales and lemonade stands to raise money for leukemia and childhood cancer research. She also hosted a toy drive for the kids who were in the hospital during Christmas. She has a mission to continue to fund and raise awareness for childhood cancer, "so no one has to go through what I've gone through."

She and her friends have founded Kids Against Cancer, which is a project commissioned to provide a tablet for every child diagnosed with cancer at Arkansas Children's Hospital so they can stay in contact with their family, friends and classmates during treatment.

Addison is now 10 years old and is undergoing maintenance chemotherapy until April 2017. We hope and pray that she stays in remission and never has to fight cancer again.
